Navigating Your First Few Weeks at a New Facility

Congratulations on starting your new assignment with Skillwork! Whether it's today or later this week, stepping into a new role at a new facility can bring a whirlwind of emotions. At Skillwork Academy, we understand the blend of excitement and nervousness that comes with this transition. That’s why we’re here to offer guidance and support as you embark on this new journey. Here’s how you can  set yourself up for success and make the most of your initial weeks on site.

1. Get Acquainted with Your Facility’s Location

One of the most effective ways to reduce first-day stress is to familiarize yourself with your new job site. If you haven’t already, make sure you know the facility’s address and the best route to get there. It’s a great idea to drive to the facility before your official start date to understand the commute, parking arrangements, and the facility’s layout. This preparation will help you avoid any last-minute hiccups and ensure you arrive on time, ready to make a strong first impression as a skilled worker.

2. Check In with Your Engagement Coordinator

Your Engagement Coordinator (EC) is your main point of contact at Skillwork and a vital part of your support system. Even if you’re working at a facility far from our headquarters, you’re still a part of the Skillwork team. On your first day, be sure to notify your EC that you’ve arrived safely. They’re here to help with any questions or issues you might encounter. Regular communication with your EC will ensure you have the support you need to navigate your new role in the skilled trades effectively.

3. Master the Paycom System

Starting on your first day, it's essential to use Paycom efficiently. This system will be key for logging your time, and breaks, and ensuring accurate records of your hours worked. Developing good habits with Paycom from the outset will help you manage your time card smoothly. Some facilities may also have their own time-tracking systems, which is completely normal. This dual tracking helps Skillwork's payroll team ensure that your hours are recorded accurately and that you are paid correctly. Should any discrepancies arise, your EC and our payroll team are here to assist.

4. Manage Your Expectations

Entering a new job is always an adjustment, and it’s natural to feel both excitement and some anxiety. You’re likely in a new town, working with new colleagues, and adapting to a new facility. Be prepared for a learning curve and give yourself time to adapt. It’s crucial to set realistic expectations and allow yourself some grace during this period. A successful start in your new skilled trades role involves understanding that initial challenges are a normal part of the transition.

The Three Ps for Success

To help you through this period, consider applying the three Ps: Positive, Patient, and Proactive.
  • Be Positive: Your attitude can greatly impact your experience and interactions at the facility. Maintaining a positive outlook helps not only you but also those around you. As John Gordon wisely stated, “Being positive won’t guarantee you’ll succeed, but being negative will guarantee that you won’t.”
  • Be Patient: Understand that it takes time to adjust to a new job. You may encounter challenges, and not every day will go smoothly. Practice patience with yourself and your new team as you all get accustomed to each other and the work environment.
  • Be Proactive: Take the initiative to learn, ask questions, and offer help. Even if you don’t have everything figured out right away, showing a proactive attitude will demonstrate your commitment and willingness to integrate into the team of skilled workers.

Transitioning Out of Your Introductory Weeks

As you start to settle into your role, keep these key points in mind:
  • Lodging Plan: Have a clear plan for your accommodation, whether it’s a hotel or a furnished rental. One of Skillwork's housing coordinators will follow up to ensure you have everything sorted out and offer support if needed.
  • Provide Feedback: Your EC will continue to check in with you throughout your assignment. Share your feedback to help us support you better. Your insights are crucial for enhancing our services and ensuring your success in the skilled trades.
  • Understanding Payday: Your first paycheck will be issued on the second Friday after your start date, with subsequent payments every Friday. For any questions regarding guaranteed hours or payment, connect with your EC.

Final Thoughts

Starting a new job with Skillwork is a significant milestone, and you’re more than capable of handling this transition. Embrace the journey with a positive mindset, practice patience, and stay proactive. With these strategies, you’ll navigate your first few weeks confidently and set the stage for a successful and rewarding assignment.
Best of luck, and welcome to your new role in the skilled trades!
